Understanding LGBTQ+ Homelessness in Kenya

Research indicates that LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya face a disproportionate risk of homelessness, with youth being particularly vulnerable. Studies suggest that LGBTQ+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Shockingly, up to 40% of Kenya’s homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+, despite constituting only a fraction of the total population. This disparity not only exposes LGBTQ+ youth to homelessness but also exacerbates their vulnerability to assault, trauma, mental health issues, and suicidal ideation.

Family rejection is a significant factor driving LGBTQ+ youth into homelessness. Many find themselves without shelter due to familial conflict arising from their sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, systemic issues such as poverty, inadequate social services, and housing shortages contribute to the homelessness crisis among LGBTQ+ individuals. Distressingly, instances of domestic violence, particularly among bisexual and transgender individuals, further compound the issue.

Exiting homelessness poses numerous challenges, particularly for LGBTQ+ youth. Existing support systems are often ill-equipped to address their unique needs, and societal barriers such as discrimination only serve to perpetuate their homelessness. Additionally, the transition from youth to adulthood complicates access to services, exacerbating the problem

To combat LGBTQ+ homelessness effectively, inclusive and affirming housing options must be made available, accompanied by comprehensive support services. These services should encompass mental health support, healthcare access, legal aid, and transition-related assistance. Furthermore, there is a pressing need for legislation that prohibits discrimination in housing and services based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
